Membership
The core business of AIMS@JCU is to facilitate collaboration between the Australian Institute of Marine Science and James Cook University, primarily through the training of joint and high-quality postgraduate students. To that end we offer postgraduate scholarships, conference funding and logistical support to eligible students where possible. Thus, the major benefits to our members come in the form of student support.
Who can become an AIMS@JCU member?
Membership is open to students, supervisors, and researchers who are engaged in collaborative research between AIMS and JCU.
There are several categories of AIMS@JCU membership:
- Student
- Staff
- AIMS@JCU post-doc and
- Alumni
To become a full student member, students must have a JCU higher research degree (MPhil or PhD) enrolment and at least one AIMS-based supervisor or advisor.
Associate membership is available for undergraduate students and students not enrolled at JCU; however, there must be a genuine link to both JCU and AIMS through supervision/research and these are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
What are the benefits of membership?

What are the responsibilities of membership?
Full student members are required to complete a progress report each year.
AIMS@JCU members are asked to follow the Author affiliation guidelines below:
AIMS@JCU Members have access to AIMS@JCU funding opportunities, supervision, and AIMS and JCU facilities (e.g. JCU Library, AIMS SeaSim) In return, all members are required to follow the below author affiliation guidelines for papers, theses, and presentations.
Please note: Where the resources of the home institute only have been used, AIMS@JCU affiliation is not required.
AIMS@JCU member who is:
- a student or volunteer: 2,1,3,4,5
- an AIMS@JCU Postdoctoral Fellow employed through AIMS: 1,3,2,4,5
- an AIMS@JCU Postdoctoral Fellow employed through JCU: 1,2,3,4,5
- an AIMS@JCU Scholarship student: 1,4,3,5
- an employee of AIMS and an adjunct of JCU, with no specific college affiliation: 3,1,2,5
- an employee of AIMS and an adjunct of JCU, with specific college affiliation: 3,1,4,5
- an employee of AIMS not an adjunct of JCU: 3,1,5
- an employee of JCU and an adjunct of AIMS: 4,1,3,5
- an employee of JCU not an adjunct of AIMS: 4,1,5

It is important to be aware that there are advantages for both partner institutions in adopting the approved format. Publications with an author affiliation AIMS@JCU can be claimed by JCU and included as publications under the Institutional Grant Scheme (IGS) funding scheme. Therefore AIMS@JCU publications will contribute to earning funds for JCU. Similarly AIMS can note any AIMS@JCU publications as Outputs, for the Federal Funds received, increasing AIMS publications will be a positive contribution to outputs specifically measured by AIMS and reported in the Annual Report.
Regarding Traditional Owners acknowledgements we ask that you please include:
“I acknowledge the Wulgurukaba and Bindal people as the Traditional Owners of the land the research was conducted on.”
The Wulgurukaba and Bindal people are associated with the AIMS and JCU Townsville sites.
Traditional Owners location(s) needs to be updated to reflect the country where the work was done. Please remember to include research site, office and home (e.g. working from home) locations as relevant.
How to become an AIMS@JCU member?
To become a member, please click on the relevant button below and complete the application form. You will be asked to upload a copy of your CV and a photo that clearly shows your face. The application will be assessed for eligibility with the AIMS@JCU secretariate and you will be notified of the outcome.
If you re a full student member, the information and photo you submit will be used to create your student profile.
If you are a staff member, your information will be used for potential new students to approach you for research supervision.
