AIMS@JCU Events
AIMS@JCU focusses on supporting and enriching our members experience, to this end, several events are regularly organised.
R Statistics course
Each year Dr Murray Logan delivers a highly commended and popular two-week course on using the foundational statistical software R. Students are given an introduction and encouraged to work through their own project data. AIMS@JCU members are given priority and free access to the course. An email will be sent to all members to sign up form the course each year.
AIMS@JCU Writing retreat
Each year a select number of AIMS@JCU student members are privileged to attend the successful 3 day all inclusive writing retreat on Magnetic Island. Students are consistently amazed at how productive they are over the 3 days, with structured writing schedules, expert talks, mindfulness and opportunities for building social supports, the writing retreat is a student favourite. Details of writing retreat will be sent to AIMS@JCU members via email. for more information about passed retreats, see the Newsletters or here.
Pomodoro
Students that attended the AIMS@JCU writing retreat found the communal pomodoro sessions so productive, they wanted to continue them on a more regular basis. The sessions, named after a tomato shaped kitchen timer, use a set schedule of work and rest to focus on tasks. The sessions are open to staff and student members. To find out about the next session, available in person or online, please email us.
Morning Tea
If you need a break from staring at data or getting lost down research worm holes, come and meet some like-minded marine science geeks at AIMS@JCU morning tea. Held each month, alternating between AIMS canteen and JCU. The morning teas are open to all and offer a great opportunity to meet old and new friends over a cuppa and a treat.
AIMS@JCU End of Year celebration
AIMS@JCU end of year celebration is the annual social event, an opportunity to get to know peers and supervisors in a relaxed setting. Previous years have seen members bonding over mini golf, barefoot bowls, and dress up parties. An email will be sent to all members about the event.
Seminar day
The highlight of the AIMS@JCU Calander is the Seminar day. Each year, the fabulous work of our members is showcased through 12 minute presentations, 3 and 5 minute thesis speed talks, posters and photos. All sessions are eligible for generous competitive awards with $7,500 of project funds available.
Seminar day gives a chance to hone communication skills in a safe and supportive environment before hitting the conference circuit. With so many amazing talks and plenty of opportunity for feedback and networking the day has a buzz and is of a consistent high quality.
