Coral genetics and microbiology in large-scale breeding programs for reef restoration interventions

Successful completion of BSc (Hons) in Marine Biology at the University of Plymouth (UK) with First-Class Honors. Participated in Coral Reef Ecology programs in the Seychelles collecting data on reef health and 3D-photogrammetry to create models of the local MPA. Undertaken Advanced Bioinformatics and Coral Reef Ecology subjects in Trimester 3 2025 at JCU.

Project Description

Projects associated with quality-control aspects in coral aquaculture in terms of the genetic diversity of animals produced and microbiology in production facilities, through assisting a research team led by Yui Sato. Works may involve preparatory tasks and sample collection associated coral spawning, molecular laboratory tasks such as DNA extraction from seawater filters and coral samples, molecular marker quantification, and preparation for genomic sequencing.

Project Importance

Looking at control aspects in coral aquaculture in terms of genetic diversity of animals produced and microbiology in production facilities. Further, the importance is linked to RRAP and PDP.

Project Methods

Preparatory tasks and sample collection associated coral spawning, molecular laboratory tasks such as DNA extraction from seawater filters and coral samples, molecular marker quantification, and preparation for genomic sequencing.

Project Results

Hoping to successfully assist in rearing genetically diverse corals to be outplanted to the GBR and help conserve this valuable, but also vulnerable ecosystem.
